  • The focus of my social action project was based around mental awareness, how learners can build their self-esteem, grow their self-love and become more confident in everything that they do. This project was important in educating learners about today’s society where there is a lot of cruelty and negativity that goes about in terms of learners being unkind to others and towards themselves. As learners are made aware of this concept it has the ability to develop their skills of problem-solving, communicating and building their self-esteem.

  • Awareness was created by talking to learners about how they can improve their self-esteem, build their self-confidence and show self-love. Learners were able to see how some of these challenges take place and how they can deal and respond to it. Learners were educated through encouragement of not being so hard on themselves, to motivate one another and to see a challenge as an opportunity to use their strengths to tackle it. In order to motivate the learners we encouraged them to say daily affirmations that will boost their confidence and also show love towards others when a peer is feeling down. Learners took part in this social action project by creating a “Garden of Greatness Flower”, the purpose of these flowers were to act as a reminder to the learners that they are good at something and be reminded of all the things they love to keep them motivated in times when they feel down. The effectiveness of this campaign really shone through the school culture as feedback from teachers was received about learners encouraging one another in class that they are capable of completing their work and they should not be so hard on themselves. Learners’ behavior and attitudes to one another changed in terms of being more kind to one another and showing more love.

  • I have developed a deeper understanding of being a role model for learners. How you respond and act to certain situations, learners learn from it and if we as teachers go into the profession with a positive mindset it can impact the learners in a positive way and change their perspective in life.

  • Teaching is not just done within the classroom, but goes beyond just teaching lessons to learners. I have developed effective communication to get the message across to learners, to develop the skills of learning new concepts and educating learners about it and by making a positive change in a child’s life, just proves how worth teaching is and how you are capable of impacting a child’s life.

  • During my time at the school, the initiative worked well and was evident by students in each grade. It is in the hands of the teachers to continuously remind these learners about being kind and showing love to others to keep the initiative going.

Your Social Action Project's focus on developing the learners' self-esteem and self-confidence is brilliant. Too often learners rely on their parents and teachers for approval. That is, they rely on external validation to feel a sense of belonging and conformity in their community. Having the learners determine their own self-worth and self-efficacy is a skill so important to possess, especially when we get older and more independent. While there is always room for constructive feedback from more knowledgeable people around them, children need to be able to have a say in their own holistic development and the interests enabling this development as well. Without this autonomy, learners will never become independent, critical thinkers which will set them back drastically in…

Hi Sheelin! Oh, my word - I love this project! I wish I had something like this when I was in school. Your "Garden of Greatness" flowers were such an amazing idea to consolidate your message and get the learners actively involved! It's so special that you got active feedback from other teachers about how learners were implementing your project in class! This just made my heart swell. I am so glad this project went so smoothly for you; it shows how my planning and effort you put into this!
